Softer bias spring for the reverse lockout mechanism found on 6-speed manual transmissions in the following applications:

  • 1997-2004 Corvette C5, all models w/ 6 speed
  • 2005-2013 Corvette C6, all models w/ 6 speed
  • 2014-2019 Corvette C7, all models w/ 7 speed
    • All other vehicles - do NOT buy this listing, see separate listing for a different kit
  • Includes one spring & instructions - all other OE parts are reused
  • Requires lifting car off ground & working in a tight space with basic hand tools. Mechanism disassembly requires a small vise and snap ring pliers.

Background info: The reverse lockout mechanism is composed of a bias spring on a piston, and a solenoid (see diagram) - in a small bracket attached to the transmission central access cover (just above vent tube) by one bolt, well above the fluid level.  When vehicle speed is below 10-15 mph the solenoid engages to allow access to reverse; that function is not altered by this modification.  The bias spring's purpose is during low speed operation; it increases the effort to enter the reverse gate beyond that of the other gates, so the operator has to make a conscious effort to enter reverse.  The OE bias spring is engineered to work in conjunction with the OE shifter; the reduced leverage & stronger centering springs of some aftermarket shifters can effectively double the effort it takes to enter reverse and make it unbearable.  The spring being sold here reduces this force by 50%, to give you about the same effort level as the OE intended.  It's a simple mod that can drastically enhance your driving experience.

It is important to understand the reverse lockout spring force can only be evaluated with the vehicle turned "on" (ie. when solenoid is active).  When the vehicle is turned "off", the solenoid in disengaged state creates a larger barrier that overrules this spring function.
